FOOD ACCESS

Making fresh, local food both affordable and accessible while connecting farmers and food-driven businesses with new opportunities.

A growth spurt that’s good for all.

Witness the remarkable journey of the Double Up Program, evolving from its local roots to achieving a statewide impact. The program’s phenomenal growth is reshaping communities and fostering widespread food accessibility across New York. When we set out to increase food accessibility, whether rural or urban, our goal was to meet shoppers where they live and where they shop.

Ten years ago, SNAP shoppers were introduced to an opportunity to double their produce purchases and earn FREE produce. Today, their collective impact tells a tale of transformative growth, as more and more shoppers lean into the opportunity to eat more healthy, local produce with the help of Double Up Food Bucks NY.

WIN FOR THE ECONOMY

Channeling the power of Double Up Food Bucks, $3.8 million in Healthy Food Sales is flowing back into local economies, fortifying communities, and fostering a cycle of health and sustainability. Double Up Food Bucks NY is a win for small, local New York businesses, who can serve more SNAP shoppers and offer more access to local, fresh produce to the friends and families living in their communities. This is the story of Can Stop Redemption Center and Groceries, Inc., a community store that takes returnable bottles and cans, turns them into cash, and provides a wide array of grocery store items for their customers to shop from. Their great partnership with Capital Roots and Double Up Food Bucks NY allows them to bring fresh local produce directly into their community, breaking down the geographic barrier for community members who used to have to travel miles to an actual grocery store. Not only does Double Up Food Bucks NY give their customers more buying power, but it’s also fueling the local economy. Since the program’s inception, $3.8 million in healthy food sales have flowed back into local economies, boosting local businesses like Can Stop Redemption center.

WIN FOR FARMERS

Double Up Food Bucks NY is a win for local New York farmers. Meet Randy Becken, a farmer who was born & raised on his family’s farm – a farm that’s been cult
ivated for many generations. Farmers across New York do what they do because they love their work and they like serving families in their communities. Randy’s family has been attending the Clinton Baily Market for nearly 90 years. As a loyal, long-term farm vendor at the farm market, they’ve been able to talk directly to their customers over the years, finding out what local food they’d like to see grown on the farm. They’re then able to adapt, growing and offering more food for their customers. This in turn drives more business for them on the farm because their customers continue to come back to them every year at the farm market. Double Up Food Bucks NY has given farmers like the Beckens, the opportunity to earn $1.5M since the programs inception. In 2024, the annual economic impact was 6x more than the annual economic impact experienced by farmers when the program launched in 2014.

WIN FOR FAMILIES

Danielle is a mother of six children who understands the struggle to feed a large family all the nutritious food they need. For Danielle, embracing the Double Up Food Bucks NY program was about more than just feeding her children healthy food. It meant not having to stress or worry about where she was going to get food for their next meal. The true testament to the impact of the program on families is that 88% of Double Up Food Bucks earned by shoppers like Danielle, are being spent to buy more fresh fruits and vegetables.

Revitalizing a historic market— and bringing fresh options back to downtown Niagara Falls.

The Niagara Falls City Market has been part of the community since horse-drawn carriages ruled the roads. Once a vibrant space buzzing with vendors, the market’s vendor count dropped to only a handful as it struggled to serve a community facing food insecurity.

Driven by intentions in the Niagara Falls Local Food Action Plan, Field & Fork Network embraced management of the market with the goal of creating an accessible and equitable resource where food, culture, and community could once again be celebrated.

Grounded in partnership.

Establishing a strong network of advocates for Double Up Food Bucks NY is instrumental in ensuring the sustainability of the program for the future. Our advocates understand the increasing challenges of food insecurity that our communities are experiencing, and they work to create long lasting solutions.

Meet Cheryl Whilby, an advocate for Double Up Food Bucks NY, who sees the incredible opportunity of the program and the blessing that it brings for so many families shopping at Schenectady Greenmarket. Not only does she understand the challenges of food insecurity, but she also embodies the values that stand behind the Double Up Food Bucks NY program – honoring unique identities and perspectives with dignity, transforming ideas into enduring solutions and weaving together diverse voices and ideas. Listen to her incredible story as the Market Manager at Schenectady Greenmarket and the impact it has had on her, the market, and the community it serves.

“Making this a space where our low-income community feels safe and that they are welcome here. Where we are able to increase the purchasing power for the folks who are most impacted.”
